Hi All,

Trying to find out some info on a button that I have in my collection. It is a tiny button that looks to be modeled after a Type I US Gold Dollar. It looks to be more decorative as opposed to being actually used due to it's size. There is no backmark.

If anyone could give me any info concerning the history or age of this button, I would appreciate your information.

Thank you,
Doug

I've dug a few of the gold coin style two-piece buttons over the yeras, in various sizes and styles. One of my first ones was rather flashy with gold gilt, and really had my heart pounding for a few moments.

These pretty little buttons seem to have been popular in the period from about 1860 through 1880 or so. Nearly all I've seen were tinned steel back, same as your non-dug example. They come in $1, $2.5, $3. and I think even $5. size. Some are also the obverse side (back) design of a U.S. gold coin, with the eagle pattern design.
