Yep, that's it. So it was gold colored, that's sweet. I wasn't able to get the photo crisp, but those tiny grooves on the face of the button are a dead giveaway. Now I just have to figure out why the button was in the middle of the road! The amazing thing to me is this: it was found 4 inches in the clay of a freshly torn up road, which was below a layer of bricks, which had been covered by a 3 inch layer of concrete. The roads were dirt until about 1870 and around then they were bricked over and this puppy was under thousands of pounds of concrete for about 150 years! I mean, it cannot be something dropped in modern times - there's no way. And it is in fairly good shape. The Saginaw River is a block from where this was found. The Saginaw River opens up to the great lakes, Lake Huron about 10 miles down the road. I am not aware of any Naval activity in that area, but it's possible I guess. Or maybe a soldier was just visiting on leave. That to me is the fun of this, trying to figure out where this stuff comes from.
