Button. I've ID'ed it but am curious about potential value.

I found this item in Dutchess County NY. So far, I've been able to determine that the Ulster guard was a New York Militia unit (specifically the 20th) in the Civil War. It's a two piece button with missing shank. Back mark is tough to read. I can make out the word Waterbury but thats about it. Has alot of gilt remaining. I've never seen one of these posted on this site before. I'm always curious about the value of items even though I have no plans to sell anything. Does anyone have an idea of what a button like this might be worth. The pictures aren't the best but i think they convey the basic idea.
I plan to get a really good button book prior to next hunting season. I would also like to hear some opinions on what the best button book for the money is. Thanks for any help with the button or suggestions for the book.

Rob

Re: Button. I've ID'ed it but am curious about potential value.

Bob Edmondson has a couple of these (Albert's #NY 89) in a recent price list, including a coat button w/Waterbury backmark for $35.

NST's price guide lists it at $225-275.

Tice's price guide values some with Horstmann backmarks at $100 to $300.

(I'm pretty sure Bob's not selling himself short by THAT much! ;) )

Thanks for the reply PBK. What's your favorite book for buttons? Is it Alberts?

Re: Button. I've ID'ed it but am curious about potential value.

We're talking about uniform buttons, right?

Albert's is a must. Just don't rely on the RV's as a guide to pricing (" X times RV = current value" is NOT reliable). A lot has happened since 1976, when the book was last updated.

Tice's books are also good, but the one on uniform buttons isn't much help past the Civil War period.

Tice's and NST's price guides can be helpful; however, I rely more on actual prices online and in catalogs and price lists. I like Bob Edmondson's best, as it includes Albert's # for reference. No pics... just several thousand buttons listed with prices. Of course, it doesn't cover everything in Albert's book, just in Bob's inventory, but it's pretty darn handy.
