Got some info back from the museum regarding the button I found recently. In their opinion it dates to the mid to late 17th century, this is due to the small fixing loop on the back. Curiously though it's in medieval style due to the way the lion is represented. The button is cast solid not hollow, also all of the punch marks have been hand applied. Someone certainly went to a lot of trouble to make it, wonder what it cost when new.

HH Robert.

I've dug buttons for many years, or course only being as early as mid. 1700s, but I've also followed them on forums, Ebay, you name it. That one is special just because it is something different and in great condition. I'm sure many button collectors in the UK would be excited by it.

That's a beautiful button. :icon_sunny:

Funny I had a wild guess at 17th century, although I based it on the loop as well. But as you say it harps back a much earlier period.

That is surely a great button! A good place in your display cabinet should be reserved for it. Yes, to me it appears earlier than the 17th century, but the loop does raise questions. Even if only 17th century it is really a top find!

Cheers Woody, I think the same as you, guessing late 16th century . Maybe this type of loop first appeared around that time.

I would have guessed Medieval :-\

Forgot to say, good photos also Rob...
Of course the first one could be better in focus, but you cannot get that good most of the time in you hand...
