Button Identification L H & Scovill

Can anyone help me with the ID and age of this button? The back of the button says L H & Scovill "Extra Rich" and I'm surprised at the amount of gilt remaining. The front is impossible to tell. Might be a flat front. It was found at about 5 inches at a home that dates to the early 1800's. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Button Identification L H & Scovill

Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill partnered from 1811-1827. This backmark was used in the early/mid 1820's as best I can find. Fairly sure it would be a civilian button.

Definitely agree with your research. In 1830, after Leavenworth and Hayden had left the plant actually burned down so your button is dated before that date. Those old coin or flat button were some very well made and to find one that old with gold gilt still on it is not that rare. That is definitely a keeper and congrads.

Agreed, looks like in Tice's book 1821-1827, Civilian button.

Do you think there is anything on the face of the button or were they just flat? I can't make anything out. Thanks for the info.

I found a button exactly like this one! The front still has traces of gold on it on the outer circumference. No design that I can see on mine. Seems that it was a flat gilded front and back with the stamp as shown in your picture. Congrats! This helps me age mine as well!
