Hard to make out the writing on the back... Says maybe " Ehorst Bros CO..."

The button maybe a little corroded and I'm hoping I could save it or bring out the image a little bit more... Does anyone have recommendations for cleaning... Toothpicking?

Thanks all!

Appears to be a Civil War era Eagle button. Can't help on the backmark however.

It's a US eagle button, however... I believe it might be an 1875-1902 Indian Wars button, but I can't see enough detail. Nice find either way sir. Congrats!

The backmark may be one of several "Horstmann" company ones. I can see enough of the wings to make me believe that this is the earlier version of the eagle dating to the 1840s-1860s. The Indian wars eagle's wing tips were oriented more horizontally than the early version whose wing tips were more on the vertical.

Have any good approaches to trying to clean it up a little more anyone any suggestions?

I have used naval jelly on them and I have also tried mayonnaise. I haven't tried it but have heard ketchup will work. I would try the mayo first. Put some on the front and let it sit for a minute or two. Use a toothpick to swirl the mayo around and see if the crud starts coming off. If it does then wipe the button off and repeat until you are satisfied. You can use an old toothbrush as well. If the mayo doesn't work you can try the Naval jelly using the same method. But, be aware that the jelly is pretty harsh. If you have a piece of junk you should practice on it first before trying the jelly.

Well... Now you can see a little better... But I still wanna try and clean a little more.... This button has seen better days but makes sense since it's been in the ground a long time... Should I try some naval jelly now...? Or maybe this is as good as it gets...

I would leave it alone. You can see enough of it to ID it. Now that I can see the shield I think it dates from 1854-circa 1870. The shape of the neck is another factor attributing your button to that time frame. It could have seen use in the Indian wars as part of an older issue uniform.

Thanks for all the good information fyrffyrt1! I'm very excited that it's truly that old! That's awesome! This button was around when chief Cochise and Geronimo were around!

After looking at your cleaned pic, it is NOT an 1875-1902 Indian Wars button, it's the older variety. Congrats on a really nice old button!

I would stay away from naval jelly-too acidic

And I agree-leave it as is. It looks good, and (from too much bad experience on my part) I know that if you try to clean it further you will regret it. BACK AWAY FROM THE BUTTON!! :laughing7:
