but it dosn't look like typical english.
that appears to be an AXE on the left.

Don't recognize it but would guess it's an early 19th century gilt button of European manufacture.

I also tried tweaking the pic to bring out a bit more detail.

Thanks for the replies...I didn't know which way to display it and tried tweaking it to bring out the detail too, but just ended up posting it as scanned. Hoping someone would see the axe, recognize it as something they had seen before and would have more details on the writing, etc. Haven't been able to determine what the symbol opposite the axe is.

The axe is very similar to the one on a button(" I Axe My Way") in Albert's Button book on page 407. Possibly just a standard axe for the era, but thought it may give some leads.
