Is anyone familiar with the bottom that has crossed swords and MG? It is the first one I have seen.

It's not a button, it is a US Army collar-insignia disc. After-posting correction: It represents a US Army Cavalry Machine Gun unit.

It is most probably from 1917 to 1921 (no later than that), but I need to see a well-focused closeup photo of its back to be certain of its time-period.

Thanks for the info. I'm in Texas. Must of made its way down from Michigan. The back isn't very good. But here it is.

The collar disk is a "type 1" style and would date anywhere from 1910 - 1937. That's a cool one! I think though that rather than it being Michigan National Guard it's more likely a Machine Gun battalion associated with a cavalry division.

Thanks for the photo of the disc's back, which shows its "attachment form." That particular form is called a threaded stud with thumbscrew disc. As I suspected, your collar-insignia disc dates from 1917 to 1921.

But I'm going to have to change my previous ID of the meaning of the letters on its front. It is a US Army Cavalry Machine Gun unit's insignia-disc, not a Michigan National Guard Cavalry unit. I apologize for the error. I'd forgotten, at that time, that state's name on these discs was abbreviated MICH, not MG. I'll go correct my previous post now.

The information at the following webpage may be of interest to you:

Edit-note: NOLA_Ken and I were typing at the same time. He is correct, of course.

NOLA_Ken, I dated it as 1917-1921 based on the info and photos Here:
Dating Metallic Insignia: Collar Disks

That webpage shows a Cavalry Machine Gun insignia-disc with the letters MG located above the sabers, on the same background seen on AAB's insignia-disc. It dates that disc as 1917-1921. The webpage also contains info saying the background was changed to a different pattern in 1926. It says the new background "was established as the sole official one by Army Regulations AR 600-35 of December 31, 1926". See the section on "Type 2 discs 1926-1937."

If that information is incorrect, please let me know. I don't want to be posting incorrect information.

Actually that is one of the sites I go to for info on collar disks. I think the MG disk shown there is dated 1917-21 in reference to that specific disk. The one I see there is Infantry Machine Gun Company A, I can't find any info on that specific unit, but I think it may have been a short lived unit mustered in toward the end of the war, and phased out in 1921. The dates I posted are the broad range for the type 1 disk that collectors use. I'll see if I can find any more info.....
