I hope the third time is a charm. Long story short is that I dug this button last week and I have no idea what it is. It appears to be pewter with a white paint base and red dashes around the circumference. I am a newbie to the site however I am certain it is from the late 18th century. Thanks for all your advice and help with this id.

Pardon me please, but I think you are mistaken about it being pewter. It appears to be corroded aluminum. If the "button" you found is made of aluminum, it is not from the 18th-century.

Here's a way to tell whether it is pewter or not. Pre-20th-century pewter is an alloy which contains tin, copper, and lead ...all of which are noticeably heavier than aluminum. If the object you found is quite lightweight, it is definitely not pewter.

To me, the object you found looks like the head of an aluminum 20th-century rivet or clothing-snap. It is not a button un the usual sense of that word.

couldn't be a silvered (and redded :laughing7: ) tombac cuff missing the shank?

The button is definitely missing it's shank and it is slightly convex. I have no idea if they ever painted pewter buttons. I do know that it is heavier than the penny I used for a size reference. I have found other flat brass and tombac buttons near this one on past visits. I will post some other finds from this property later today. The plantation house burned to the ground in 1900 and all that is left are 4 EXTREMELY large brick colums today. It has been a hunting preserve and tree farm since then so I am doubtfull it is a modern button. Then again I am asking for help on this button id so anything is possible an will I gratefully accept any help with this.

KIND REGARDS,
