It does look as though it is scripted or has some sort of design. Are the greenish areas what's left of gilt?

Not sure if there is any gilt on it, as I haven't cleaned it any further seeing as it may be scripted.

sometimes you have to look at what isn't there to make out what it is. have you found other buttons in the area? if so could it be a similar button. I don't see a pattern right off. good luck. Brent

looks like you need to turn it 90% to the right and it sure is close to a early scripted A button with a reg # under it i think war of 1812 era like this one .Dan

yes, I have found sixteen flat buttons on this site ranging in date from 1790-1820 and have found an 1810 half cent and 1828 large cent. I guess I will have to clean it a little bit more to see if there is any other detail there.

I cleaned it up a little bit more and YES! It does look loike the scripted "A". Can anyone tell me the rarity and possible value? Thanks.

In Albert's Button book.Your button ID# AY38 it all depends on the backmark for rarity.
1) If the mark is Leavenworth Hayden & Scovill size 20mm ,it's rarity # RV20
2)If blank back size 20mm the rarity # RV15
3) if the size is 19mm rarity # RV2
Anyway the button is 3rd Regiment,Artillery Button most likely from 1811-1813
Also Scovill Co made replica in 1952 for the 150 yr Anniversary of the founding of the Co.
The value would still lay in the holders hand for the condition of the button.
But to me if I found it,I have never sold anything that I have found.I love to collect and find buttons.
Still that is a AWESOME find,Congrats

It is the best military button I have found to date and I was awestruck of just finding it! I am finding quite the passion for buttons as well, and I have never sold anything in my collection either. Thanks for the help. P.S. There is no backmark.
