In the April thread he says it reads "WELLINGTON"

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,229762.0.html

I believe I might of found two brief references to Wellington buttons -

From an 1853 book "Birmingham- A Poem" pg 113

"And lastly, there are Wellington or bronzed military buttons, of rich quality and exquisitely ornamented, crest buttons, &c."

http://books.google.com/books?id=pt...tons"&pg=PA113#v=onepage&q=wellington&f=false

And this archaeology report from a site on Ossabaw island, Georgia-

Several buttons had backmarks that provided limited
diagnostic information. ... One
brass button reverse stamped, “Wellington” came from
Locus C, Level 3.

In the Birmingham book I think they are attributing the Wellington buttons to Elliott and Sons. I found 1850s references that place them on Regent Street.

Yeah, they used to be on Regent Street, Birmingham, but later moved to London. Some sources say they moved in 1837, some in 1850's.
