Found this unusual button at a campsite that was used by both Union and confederate, and was the homesite of a very wealthy plantation owner. Never seen this type before, found many union buttons and flat buttons here. Any ideas?

More pics from the back? and from the side for thickness please...

I'm not seeing a button, depending on what's on the front, I'm thinking it's a skirt hem weight. :icon_scratch:

No, it isn't a hem weight. It is definetly a button, the back crumbled in my hands when I pulled it out of the ground. I hope these pics will shed better light. I apologize for the orientation, Every time I upload a pic, it rotates 90 degrees.

Given that the back was most likely iron I would say early to mid 20th century, civilian.

Now that I've seen the back, I feel that it is a button.
I agree with nkellam, late19th - early-20thc in date as well.

Thanks very much for the follow up,
Dave
