Re: Button ID

What does the back look like? do you have a pic? your button appears to be cw but they made civilian buttons just like that but with snap backs...is your back iron and rusted?

Re: Button ID

There is no rust, just some crud that I had to clean off, so it's probably brass. There is a loop on the back that has been flattened, I will try and take a pic tonight when I get home.

forgot to ask, what's the date of the site you found it at?

I was coin hunting in a park in Arlington, VA, didn't expect to find anything old, and this popped out at about 2 inches. Relative to the Arlington House, I would say 1.5 - 2 miles.

Re: Button ID

I used to live in Arlington, I still work there, and I currently reside in Bethesda, MD. Where in MD are you?

Re: Button ID

Never been down that way, but I am having trouble finding spots to MD in this area. I grew up in WV, in the heart of CW country, so I could walk out my back door and relic hunt (found a minie ball not 10 feet from my parents back deck). How far from Bethesda are you?

Re: Button ID

that's what i was thinking but it depends on the backmark. they made that button during the civil war and well after on civilian coats

Re: Button ID

I will do my best to get something off the back. What's the best way to clean it to possibly bring out some more detail on the back, without damaging it?

Re: Button ID

i clean my buttons in lemon juice.put a little in a bowl and let the button sit for a couple mins at a time then while running under warm water, brush gently with a toothbrush.but just to clean the back up i would use just water and a toothbrush

Here are some better pics of the front and back of the button. I was unable to decipher any writing on the back.

Thanks
