Don't know what it is, but have found a similar button. To be honest I wasn't sure mine (missing loop) was a button until I saw your posting.

Typical civilian globe button. Early 1800s. Always possible it was used in a military context.

I know of these (Zouave), & although some where used by foriegn military & some were used during the CW it would be hard to prove as they are a common find here in the UK (Globe or Ball buttons). I find nearly 1 every trip in most fields & we had no American CW in the UK.

Thanks ID and all the interesting info

Globe or Ball button is a good description of the button itself. Reckon Zouave button when found with other CW relics.

Is Doublet button an older type button or just a button style reference?

Doublet is more a style of clothing which originated in the late medieval period. Normally these types are solid cast bronze or copper-alloy (at least in the UK). So that link with the 2 piece construction must be a post-medieval version, I guess late 17th century.

It would be like describing a button as a 'Jacket' Button, more a descriptor than a type. (I believe)
