Good call - I just noticed there is some thread or cloth there by the shank.

Anyway... check out these buttons, alphabetical order, second NY militia style... no idea on age.

They look real - just not excavated.

It's probebly not worth too much as they can't be attributed to a battle or person for example. They are not necessarily rare. Your back mark will be key to dating your button.

I believe those were non-dug. Being dug and condition makes a difference as well.
