Most of my sources state that the GS button replaced the regimental one during the Cardwell reforms for the OR's dress tunics, service dress and their progeny.
The officers, having to pay for their uniforms, bought and wore regimental ones. Regimental buttons were not reissued to the OR's until the 1920's I believe. (Could be wrong on that call)
I would assume some units ignored that dictate and wore regimental ones. The terriers, foot and mounted, would wear regimental ones I assume, until lost buttons would be replaced by GS ones.
(Apparently, regimental buttons were not high on the priority list for QM's)

Oh, and a little OT... how are You satisfied with Your Goldmaxx? I worked for years with my trusty C-Scope and want to change to a XP G MaxxII for relic hunting.

The GMP is great on ploughed fields, especially for small silver coins....but if you are wanting depth..forget it :-\

Thank You for Your explanation. Hope to get some more from this site in autumn. Way too much brushwood now. British troops used tanks with shovels to break through the lines exacly on this spot. The remains from three german soldiers were found too...
For the XP...did You tried some of the bigger coils?

I'm not a believer in swapping coils :-\ they all have there down side, bigger means less discrimination, smaller less depth. 99% of my detecting is ploughed land, so no need for great depth :icon_thumleft:

The XP 11" is all I use now, found more tiny hammered silver with it than the smaller coil, good depth as well. Worth its money all day long, look at a few of my posts. Dad has a Cortes & I get 70% of the finds & he grids right next to me.

The button is 1902 or later
