Would one of you button experts be able to read the back of this one. Just trying to get a date/maker. I believe its a NY state militia button.

I can see an O then a bit forward an S and then maybe an E a bit more.

Thanks

From the letters you gave the backmark might be Steel & Johnson The rim on those buttons is usually very fragile. I would soak that button in a mix of half water half lemon juice and keep an eye on it. It should be fairly clean in a few minutes or so. You can brush the face with a soft tooth brush but be careful of the rim. Once it's clean I would put a drop of Elmers glue on the area where the rim broke to keep it from breaking any worse. The button is 1850's- 60's

Maybe thats it as the rim is very fragile and I did loose a bit. I already did a half elmers and half water mix to the remaining edge but will that wash off if I put it in the lemon juice mix?

looking at the pic again I'm pretty sure the backmark is STEELE & JOHNSON. I can see the S near the top and am pretty certain I can see the eele too. That is a fairly common backmark for NY buttons. Yeah I'm afraid the elmer's glue will wash off with the lemon juice, water mixture. The mix will take at least most of the green off though. Just be careful, leave the button in to long and you can lose some of the gilt. Also I think I forgot to mention when done with the lemon juice mix rinse the button off with water.
