GRL? Its either a company uniform monogram initials or a rich family

My very good longtime friend BigCypressHunter is definitely on the right track... but... the three Manuscript letters on the button's front say GBL. As he indicated in his reply above, on a button, they could be the initials of a:
business-name,
school-name,
social (such as, fraternal) or professional organization,
militia unit,
and etc.
But, not the initials of a person.

I have to also say, I'm disappointed (and frustrated) that although the photo of this button's back seems to show some lettering in a backmark, no mention of it, nor even a partial listing of the visible letters, was included in the ID-help request.

Soft toothbrush and water determine that backmark and it could help in identifying it. Yea forget that rich family idea. Its a machine stamped 2 piece uniform button of somekind. GBL sounds good but it doesnt ring any bells for me.

John Patterson & Co. NY (American, founded 1852). Looks like they made all sorts of coats and uniforms. Not sure about the time frame of your button. Nice find!

Here is a family crest button by John Patterson & Co. NY https://collection.cooperhewitt.org/objects/18352935/

https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/159391

This handsome chauffeur's uniform and its coordinate pieces are emblematic of the life of high society in the late 1920s when wealthy families had private staff that included smartly dressed chauffeurs, maids and cooks. The manufacturer, John Patterson & Company, had both Fifth Avenue, New York, and Bellevue Avenue, Newport, R.I., addresses, two of the most prestigious locations in America at that time.

They claim its military but looks like an entangled letter civilian uniform button https://www.ebay.com/itm/352435321666?ul_noapp=true
