Dug this today in a field that has yielded many flat buttons, a watch key, pocket watch, and a few CW relics. The CW relics include a really nice NY cuff, 3 Merrill carbines, and a 3 ringer in the same little 1 acre field. The site had a home at one end that was originally built between 1812-1814. I have found scattered CW relics all over the entire area. Small button to even be a military cuff, but it definitely has something on it. It is pretty toasted. Thanks in advance.:dontknow:

Notice that the "toasted" dug button has small round-ish shallow indentions spaced in a circle around the edge of its front. I've seen that pattern on various civilian-usage "flower buttons." I should mention that diggers tend to refer to them as "flower buttons" even though many of them show a geometric design instead of an actual flower. In my opinion, yours dates from the mid-1800s.

Buttons of such extremely tiny size (11.6mm) are rare. I've seen that size of button on ladies' shoes and clothing from that era. Men's clothing tended to have larger buttons.
