I think the button says "rich orange gilt". can't quite make out the name of the maker though...j. something...

Your button is a 1-piece brass "flat button" from approximately 1800 to the early 1840s. The backmark appears to be "J. Mann's / Rich Orange" (with 4-petal flowers between the maker's name and the quality-rating). "Rich Orange" means your brass button was plated with orange-gold gilt. J. Mann means Joseph Mann, a British button-maker in Birmingham England who was in business from 1800 to 1843.

I guess a common equivilent for the ceramic thing woucd be the disconnect to a heatpump, electric furnace, etc.
