It's a United States Army general staff button dating from the mid to late 1800's. There are many varieties: different styles of shields, etc. I believe that this one may be postwar— that is, made sometime after the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1865.

It is a US staff officers button 1850's to 60's

You found a Civil War Staff Officer button which is listed in Albert's as GS13a.........the backmark clearly dates this button c.1861-1865
