How old is this button?? It has a crown on top and word that read GILT all on the back.

It's from the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. That's when the one piece button with backmark and shank became the in thing.
 

You are in a good spot if you are digging flat buttons.
 

That is the one button I have found. I have found tons of shot gun shell end caps.
 

Like everyone above said, if you're digging buttons like that you're in a good old spot... there's a fair chance that a copper or two is nearby.

Do you know if there is an old homesite or something in the area?
 

Nice. If you are digging shotgun shells then the area in pretty much virgin. Every good hunter has to dig that target because you never know it might just be a nice button like yours.
 

No that I know of
I'd suggest looking around the area for any signs of an old homesite. Look on the tops/sides of rises in the ground and small hills (you wouldn't want to build your house in the swamp right?) and if there is exposed dirt keep an eye out for old pottery. Most importantly, let us know what you find! Haha. :laughing7:
