I found this Benedict & Barham button yesterday. I looked up the company and its dates the button from 1834-1843. My question is this - Is this some specialty button or just a regular civilian button? Just curious. It appears to have a tree (or flower with stalk) with 2 crossed laurel leaves underneath.

I'm almost 100% certain that the plant on your button is a Palmetto tree. (In addition to the leaves, it has that tree's peculiar form of bark.) Below it are what appear to be two Laurel fronds in a semi-wreath shape. The wreath and the Palmetto tree suggest the emblem is a family coat-of-arms or government (city or county) seal, or a city-or-county's Militia unit emblem. But if that's what your button is, apparently very-very few were made, because insofar as I'm aware it does not appear in the Albert button-book ("Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons").

Your photo isn't quite clear enough for me to tell whether the button's background is plain smooth or "stippled." If it is stippled, the button is probably not a government seal or Militia emblem.

I think this may be the same one, which I believe shows it to be a flower on a stippled field, and civilian. 7C32C02C-84BC-4A6E-85A8-A92542E7B94B.jpeg

The button background has a small dot pattern.
I wonder if it's related to the state of South Carolina.
Any help on where I can find out anymore about this button?
Thank-you so much for your help.
