Button I.D. ?? - Now I know what it's NOT! - Updated

My first guess was Chicago & Alton Railroad. It could be "CAR" or "RAC". It is a cuff size 15mm button. The back mark is "Superior Quality". What do you folks think?

Well...I contacted the Chicago & Alton R.R....It's not their button.

Tony -- Thanks for your inquiry about the button. We have several buttons from C&A Railroad clothing as well as some lapel pins. None of these have an "R" on them. All have only a C and an A intertwined with an ampersand (&) in the middle. At first glance at your button, I thought it might be a GAR intertwined, standing for Grand Army of the Republic. I am not that familiar with Victorian lettering, but I think the letter on your button is definitely a "C". I will look further at some other of our resources and if something turns up, I will let you know. Good luck with your search - I would be interested in the answer if resolved. --- John Thornton, President - Friends of Chicago & Alton Depot of Independence

I'm still leaning towards transit, but now I am thinking it's "RAC".

BCH that's a good idea, and it may be right, but I think the correct reading is RAC is because the letters are in that order. The C is covered by both the A and the R, thus it is in the back, and the A is covered by the C. BUT, just because the reading according to position is RAC does not mean that is the correct order as far as the organization. :dontknow: Breezie

I looked in my railroad book and could find nothing with those letters in any order. It sure does look like one though. It looks like it should be RAC.

Maybe WW1 Royal Air Corps? Many Americans fought in English and Canadian units in the early part of the war. Although there are no aviation looking markings on the button it may be a possibility. This one has me stumped but I will keep looking for you.

Could you post a picture of the backmark? It might help us identify the button.

Here is the back..."Superior Quality". I'm still leaning toward R.R. or Transit. Thanks for all the input so far. Hopefully we will figure this one out.

Any other guesses? It does not seem to be in the Van Court books from what I am told. But I don't have a copy to confirm that.
