found this the other day. it is a about 1/4 inch thick little over 1/2 inch wide.it has 19 stars around the edge 3 arrows in claw and 5 lines in the shield.my buddy says general staff officers button but had not seen one this thick

It might be a staff button but the photo does not show all the detail of the button. Staff buttons almost always have stars around the button and I'm not seeing that but again the photo is not showing the entire button. I do see some etching on the button that looks staff. Is it a muffin style? What does the back say.

These are still on a uniform but for comparison to yours here are a couple of CW staff buttons.

it is muffin style and has the stars around it could not take a pic kid left the camera in a friends car.it does not have a back

Here is a link of your button,It is a general staff button but if you look at the top of the wings
how flat that they are I would say it is Post Civil war.But how ever it is still a very nice find.
Scroll down about tow thirds of the way Item # BN341JAJJ I believe it is your button,Five stripes
in shield and 19 stars.
