Found this cuff button this morning along with a 3 ringer, a round ball and a CW pistol bullet (All within 15ft of each other) It is 12.7mm and has an eagle and a shield. Very hard to see anything else because it is so small and hard to hold to examine. Two piece with shank. It had scalloped edge on it and no stars. Eagle facing right.

Confederate officer cuff button or gen service cuff??

Or do I have the eagles head wrong. If you turn it to the left, it could be facing left?

I may have found it:

I cleaned it a little more. It has the cross sectioned field and the scalloped edge. Eagle is a totally facing left.

BV3= 1760 to 1812
rarity 9/10
early pattern (1760-1787)
has eagles left wing lower then right wing

A 2 piece button with shank, well, that type of manufacture was invented about 1835. Best guess is a militia button of that period or a little later and lost by a Civil War soldier. I'd try cleaning it a bit with toothpicks, dry to get some more detail on it. That is a nice button, you rarely see them with a stippled field.

During the Revolution, no buttons had backmarks at all, and were 1 piece. By the War of 1812 period backmarks were added, the technology had changed and this style button was invented in 1835 and the type of manufacture is still being used.

Do you have Albert's book? I looked up the button and it is listed as a Militia 2-piece. As far as I can tell it is the only militia 2-piece in Alberts.
