Classical motifs, large button... late 1700's.
Ah yes the sea horse. I was wondering what that was. That must be Neptune with a staff. I also see a flower and butterfly.CRUSADER said:PS. just realised the bottom is a hippocampus

Could be a depiction of Poseidon.CRUSADER said:bigcypresshunter said:Ah yes the sea horse. I was wondering what that was. That must be Neptune with a staff. I also see a flower and butterfly.CRUSADER said:PS. just realised the bottom is a hippocampus
the 'butterfly' is the end of the tail. There is a 'dot' as well as a 'flower' like object, so maybe sun & moon.

Poseidan is Greek and Neptune is Roman. Both sea gods. You may be correct with the matching tail. I cant match the staff.Silver Searcher said:Could be a depiction of Poseidon.

CRUSADER said:Although its the right size for a late 1700s 'Dandy' Button, I've never seen one this age that has been moulded with a raised design, in fact they are all incised into a flat button. I doubt its 18th century, but its the first one I have seen like it. Is that a 'known' star sign? (not good with these)
