I need help IDing this button that I found at an old park in New Orleans. Cleaned it minimally so far. Any idea of what it is?

What a fascinating .. but bizarre looking button! It looks like a sorta grotesque rendition of the bust of Athena or somebody. Oddly strange, but I like it!

That looks very similar if not exact. What is that?

It has the looks of a maritime button, possibly a steamship line.

Some angles resemble an anchor. What do you think the 3 characters are?

I cleaned it up. Its a US Marine Hospital Service button from 1880.

Albert's page 286.

That is awesome! I know quite a lot about the history of New Orleans, but I didn't know about the Marine Hospital Service.

Here is a very good article about the old hospital property:

P.S. New Orleans is my favorite city to visit. If anyone wants to extend an invitation for a hunt down there, I'll be on the plane tomorrow.

Here is me on Halloween 2017 at The Cigar Factory in the French Quarter.

I would, but I've moved to Colorado... I'll be back sometime before long to visit though and my detector will be making the trip with me

New Orleans is one of my favorite places as well. LA is a metal detectorist friendly state in general. I would also be interested in any invitation to hunt in LA!
