Hi everybody,

This is my first post. I will introduce myself in the new member thread very soon. But I just can't wait to have you all look at this button first. I did not find it, a friend of mine did. He found it on his farm in Mississippi. I told him I would post it up on here and have the experts see if the can identify it. He is of course hoping it's civil war era, and that would be great if it was, but neither of us have been able to find anything like it in our internet searching. He believes it says "Union Made" across the bottom, which has me thinking it may be more labor union related. Thanks!

What does the top say, looks like "Star Chief"? Looks like a late 19th Century, maybe even early 20th century, civilian coat button. I am almost sure it is not Civil War though, never heard of any looking like that before. I don't know if any Union Civil War buttons even say "Union" on them.

To me it looks like it says "STAR CHINA" but that's just a guess. My Buddy can't make it out either. Sorry I don't have better pictures. We live in different states, and all I have is this cell phone picture. I haven't actually seen the item, but he describes it as a button. If need be, I'll have him get a picture of the back, and put something next to it for size comparison.

I don't see the "union" either, but he's the one who can hold it, and turn it in the light, and that's what he sees. But even he doesn't know for sure.

Most union made buttons are workwear buttons, overalls, coats.

Right you are. Following up on that lead, I found there is a clothing company called UNIONMADE, based out of San Francisco, but they only opened in 2009. Also, as you suggest, I have been able to find several pictures of buttons on shirts, jackets, and coveralls that say Union Made. I'm not sure if they are affiliated with that clothing company or not, it doesn't appear so. Regardless, they are nothing like the button in the above photo, as they have no logo, let alone a shield, and they say nothing else.

It's definitely from a pair of overalls, a jacket, or other work clothing, Union Made just means Union Made.... There were several different ______ Chief companies, I couldn't find yours, but here are a couple other ones. I'd guess Depression Era, 1930's....
