button found in corn field

I found this Button in a corn field in Portsmouth, RI. It was a British encampment. it was also where the battle of Rhode Island took place. I can't find a record of the British 9th or 6th regiment in this location. Can anybody tell if this is British or American or French?

Not much to go on here, but looks to me like a cast pewter button from the late 18th century. I have found similar buttons at Rev sites in South Carolina.
