Re: Button Experts Wanted?

Not an expert, but I've seen some similar buttons. Known as 'flower buttons', they were decorated on the fronts is stark contrast to the plain, or flat buttons of the previous generations. I wonder if it was seen as scandalous to wear such flamboyant buttons?

First... that "style" of button is genericly referred to by relic-diggers and button-collectors as a "flower-button" ...even though many variations do not show a flower's blossom -- but instead, show a geometric design, like your specimen.

That style of button was manufactured-&-sold only for use on Civilian clothing. Insofar as I'm aware, there is no Historical documentation that any were ever ordered from a manufacturer under a Military contract by the US government, or any state government (for its Militia). There also seems to be no record of any such buttons being officially issued to an American Military unit's soldiers.

That being said... we relic-diggers know that many such buttons were worn by a number of "needy" Confederate soldiers when their Quartermaster could not supply a replacement for one of their lost Military buttons.

On that note, CS-camp-dug evidence also shows a significant number of yankee "eagle" buttons were taken off captured yankee uniforms and worn as a replacement for an unavailable Confederate Military button.
