I found another button in the older area of my permission property. I have never seen this type shank on any of the many buttons I have dug here in Alabama. Feels and looks like lead. Maybe pewter? Nothing visible on the face. Can anyone date and or ID this type button?

That is an odd shank type, I'm going to guess it's not British.

Your button appears to be a cast "white-metal" (not lead) 1-piece flatbutton whose embedded copper or brass or iron wire loop got pulled out of the dome-shaped shank. Made during the second half of the 1700s into the very-early 1800s. It is an uncommon variation, but I've seen a number of them dug at Colonial-era towns such as Fredericksburg VA.

Thank you CG. I saw a few French buttons from the 1700s that had 4 holes on the dome, but none had 2. That is amazing to me that I found it in Alabama. The site dates back to 1834 and I figured there would be some 1700-early 1800 there. Hope that means we can find some more early stuff there!
