I hope someone can help a friend of mine identify this piece. It was dug in an area where Civil War era buttons and coins have been found. It has a small star on the front and no markings on the back. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking. HH.

Definitely a "tack-rivet," used to connect two thick pieces of leather, or connect something onto thick leather. I've seen a few dug-up starmarked ones reported to be from civil war areas, but dig-location alone isn't conclusive proof of 1861-65 age. Proof would be seeing them on a non-dug civil war military belt or cartridge-box, etc. Perhaps somebody here can provide that type of conclusive proof.
