I am posting here to solicit a little help in possibly dating a button I found this week. I dont have a picture to post but the description is

Round aprox the same dia. as a nickel.
one piece with intact shank.
there is some gold gilt on the face and rim
the back is concave with gold
around the shank is what appears to be like a wreath of vines and the word "GILT" at the top.

I cant find it in any button sites the site has produced items from colonial to just before the civil war including Revolutionary and war of 1812.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you have found is a relatively common flat button. I have dug many that only have the word Gilt on the back. Some are more elaborately decorated on the back than others. My guess and it is only a guess is pre-CW maybe 1820s-40s.

I agree with the probable dates.
