Re: Button Age ID ?? Thanks

It's a civilian button from about 1800 to the 1820's. If you can make out the backmark that might help narrow down the date a bit. I would clean it in a 50/50 mix of water and lemon juice. Don't leave it in to long. Take it out every now and then and rinse it off to check the progress. That type of button has several names. flat, coin, gilt, penny. I've just always called them flat buttons

Re: Button Age ID ?? Thanks

Looking at this again. I think I see L H Scovill which stands for Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill. They were in business from 1811 to 1827. some of the other words are probably something like Extra Rich Superfine or something like that. It also looks like it might have the word Waterbury on it as well.

Nice job! :icon_thumleft: I think it might say "Warranted Extra" ???

I believe the button reads that it is for Robert Ewing of Philadelphia. He was a prominent merchant on Chestnut St. He was born about 1796 in Maryland. So given Vayank's info to narrow it down IMO the button is likely from ~1820-1827.

Very cool. I've never seen that exact mark and don't recall ever seeing one saying it was made for a particular merchant.
Bramalbe find is right about it saying Warranted Extra.
By the way T Hunter, Good job on cleaning the button.
