Okay . . obviously this is a "skeleton" ;) . . . aprx 4 inches long, top part aprx 2 1/2 inches wide . . . my Hub thinks it is a Catfish skull . . . what ya' all think? ???

Found it on a small beach on the Va side of the Nice Bridge http://www.ce.jhu.edu/mdcive/nice.htm where there is some woods as well . . many little animals. . squirrels, raccoons, so forth as well as larger, deer.

When I found it I had to laugh ;D for the first thought that came to mind was a mini helmet from Molly Hatchet . . reckon I am showing my age eh :-[ ;)

It's a pelvic bone from a deer.

the first thought that came to mind was a mini helmet from Molly Hatchet . .

Be careful. Anytime you pick up bones in the woods, you're "Flirtin' with disaster". :D (showing my age, too...).

Pelvis from a whitetail fawn or a Sika deer?

I agree with D.C. and Charlie on the deer pelvic bone. On "gutting" or "dressing a deer the bone part between the is split to divide the two hind quarters and the sockets below make up half the ball joint of the animals hips. Any other deer hunters agree?

It's a little one, though. Only 3". I'm not sure if at that age of a small & young whitetail of maybe 20 pounds+/- the center seam is fully calcified. Maybe a Nutria pelvis??

Hey, BioProf. You're needed in isle six!

To get at what this is, I think we need a little bigger picture as well as some different angle shots. I don't think it is a deer pelvis or a skull of a catfish. Let's get better pictures. You hear the doctors say that on the TV shows all the time. This time it's true.

Actually it looks like a cat pelvis which may explain your cats reluctance..... :)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that since you found it at the beach that its the scull of some sort of sea gull or sea bird.

I'm beginning to worry about Charlie. How many other people would be able to identify a rat's pelvis?
Cheers ;D Mike

I reread this post and you may be right.3 inches is a little large for a rat pelvis,I would think.
