Was reading through some old New York Times newspapers and came upon an article written in 1910 about the death of a spinister named Elizabeth Hays, who lived about 4 miles from Burlington NJ, in an old delapitated farmhouse.
When she died, it was discovered that she had thousands of dollars tucked away in every nook and cranny in her home....the first nights search yielded over 100000.00..................for years people had taken pity on Miss Hays, believing her to be poverty striken

Now I wonder how much was buried outside ......and here is an odd twist to this story. Her closest neighhbor about a mile away was Schuyler Rainier. Mr Rainier was another ecentric old bachelor. He died the same year. Mr Rainier had promised his neice repeatedly that when he died, everything would be left to her. After his death, the will could not be found and a court battle between the heirs ensued. The neice...grab this.... went crazy and was put into an insane assylum. The court ordered the sale of Mr Rainiers estate estimated at 250 thousand. At the sale a century old wagon was sold to a neighboring farmer for 4 dollars. Upon inspection of his purchase the farmer found the lost will. The neices and nephews were not thrilled as the new will gave them each only 3000 and the bulk of the estate to the crazy neice in the nut house.
Mr Schuyler had begun his employment as a a chore boy but after the civil war he had invested in government bonds which over the course of theyears had made him a very wealthy man.
Now two years before his death ,Mr Schuylers house had been robbed while he was in the fields. The theif had locked up Mr Schuylers housekeeper and broken into the safe.A wealthy neighbor was arrested and charged with the crime....only....a few days afterward a man from Philadelphia informed Mr Schuyler of the real thief, who was arrested tried and put in prison.

Ok ....we are three to four miles out of Burlington and evidently these people here had lots and lots of money..........Who ever lives near this community needs to get out there and do some research and digging!

Thanks Gyspy, I am sure Neil and few others will look into it, a tad too far for me but I did forward the link to a close friend who lives in Mt Holly, which is in the main hub of Burlington County.

I do know on a farm in Burlington, a member of SJMDC club (who is a farmer) did find all kinds of big Silver coins when a house was torn down or renovated, I was looking for the article and not sure if it was in Western and Eastern or just in our Club newletter. Maybe Neil will have the article or remember the circumstances.

Don (probably 50+ miles from that area)

Don,
That article about Henry and the house with silver walls, written by Amy Maruso, was in the September, 2005 issue of W+E Treasures.
