Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Many moons ago when I was stationed at Landstuhl, Germany I was allowed to search inside and around the castle. In a courtyard at the top I found this piece of jewelry, and around the outside walls I found what appears to be cannon balls, lead shot, and some sort of spearhead. Some day I would like to have all this carbon dated as the castle was built in 1162 and was attacked a couple times in the 1500s. Burg Nanstein.jpgcastlefinds.jpg

Carbon dating only works on organic materials like wood. Metal cannot be carbon dated. It does look like a spear point and lead round balls, but the others don't look like cannon balls to me. The jewelry piece looks fairly modern. Hopefully some of our European members will tell us a relative date on the spearhead. That looks like a dream place to hunt around, did you have a detector there??

Hey gunsil, thanks for the info. Yes, I did have a Fisher detector back then. It is probably no longer allowed, like many places I used to go. I recently took my old D-tex CK-20 out of mothballs and couldn't believe it still works like new. I think I bought it in 1978. I just got a good deal on a Fisher F70 though, so I picked it up. Just starting to get back into the hobby....looking for spots in AZ, but they seem to be few and far between.
