Bunker "MAYBE" close by where I live

I was out scouting yesterday and seen an older fella I somewhat know.We chit chatted for a little bit and I told him that I have been metal detecting. He told me about an old war bunker(not sure what war he said,I wasnt paying much attention until I heard bunker,I was trying to get out of there to go MD'ing,LOL) that was right down the street, but wasnt sure "exactly" where it was.He said he knew just the general area. How would I go about trying to research this type of stuff?..........
I am 'around' alot of stuff that happened back in the day, battle of natural bridge,Fort leon,st.marks railroad,ect....Jody

start off with the local library and tax deed office -- old base blue prints --things like that --rebump into the old fellow if possible -- and" mine" his brain for every bit of old time knowledge hes got locked away in it --old folks can be a great source of inforrmation about the local area and its history -- a few min spent chatting can do as much good as days of research can. Hey Jody,

I wonder if he may have been referring to a Civil Defense bunker. I have read that during the early parts of the Cold War, the Federal Government was trying to insure continuity of government at all levels should there be a nuclear attack.

Therefore, it would seem logical that each state government would have setup some sort of contingency operations center underground to provide essential decision making following an attack. Just an idea...I have no specifics on what would have been done in the Tallhassee area.

I doubt if it would be underground unless it was stocked with wetsuits and rafts! Could be an above-ground one I guess. Maybe you could take a Google Earth look around the area and see if anything might look like it. It would be cool if you could find it!

Re: Bunker "MAYBE" close by where I live

I've found tons of information in the reference sections of local libraries. There are usually a few autobiographies written about life and growing up in those towns, but many times the titles hide that fact. Your best bet is to ask the librarian who the staff historian is and hook up with them.

From what I've found, once you break the ice with them, you can't get them to shut up. ;D

Good Luck!

Re: Bunker "MAYBE" close by where I live

Heck...The baby(Nathan) is doing just great, just to the point almost sleeps all night :),thanks for asking gregg
I did alittle more digging(not literally) into the bunker. There was infact a bunker(If thats what you call a hole dug into the earth by men) that was used to store stuff, what stuff?I have no idea, but, that "hole"has long been covered up and basically there is a house sitting right on top of the "old hole".So thats the end to that.....Jody

Re: Bunker "MAYBE" close by where I live

bummer on the house being built on hole..lol..glad to hear baby is doing fine. pm me what part of florida are ya close to gainesville? maybe the hole will turn out bigger than ya thought and part of it isn't covered up..lol...gregg

Re: Bunker "MAYBE" close by where I live

I know this is an old post but kinda just found it. During WWII there were a large number of bunkers built by the military all along the Coast line here in Florida. Our state has been a haven for smugglers and pirates for ever and during the war, German U boats prowled the coast. At least two germans were actually caught (both heading back out to their subs) that I know of for sure. One in the Tampa area and one just north of Ft. Pierce.

The bunkers were lookout posts. They were simply abandoned after the war and eventually, some were covered by the sands. There is one I found beach hunting between Vero Beach and Ft. Pierce. I've never actually been into it (and doubt that there would be anything in it anyway) but have been on it. It stood out because of its shape, flat across the top and straight, sloped sides. The MD went totally crazy across the whole thing.

I don't know if there are any records left that would show their locations. It's also worthy to note that certain areas of our coast line were used during the war for amphibious landing training because they so closely resembled many of the Pacific Islands onshore and off. Military relics turn up in these areas on a regular basis but be careful. Occasionally explosive ordnance turns up too. At least two of these landing sites are along the Treasure Coast. UDT people were trained just North of Ft. Pierce and offshore some of the underwater obstacles they used to practice blowing up are still in place. Just a special note on this area: It's always good for a lobster dinner.
