Bummed about a silver half?.....Not any more...

I had to take our calico cat to the vet to drop her off for some tests this morning. They think she has Lymphosarcoma....personally I don't think so, because she doesn't really have the clinical signs and symptoms, but what do I know? There is something going on though....so a battery of tests is in order.

On my way back from the vet, I stopped to get the mail at the post office, but they were still sorting it....so.....my detector's in the car....and there's a house catty corner from the Post Office where I have carte blanche to hunt, so I figured I'd poke around there a bit....about 15 minutes or so...just long enough to find my 84th silver coin since Oct 1st. (I have this silly 100 silver before 12-31 thing going on...mostly in my mind)

I was right about my old 6000....it's missing deeper coins. This is my first Franklin half...my deepest half, my newest silver half....and the butt ugliest half I've ever dug. It was about 6 inches down, almost on edge, under a pine tree and the high acid content of the soil has all but destroyed the surfaces of the coin. I didn't help it with the gouge I put in it...so I guess I'm almost glad it wasn't a real dandy. I'd be too bummed to show you guys (and gals).

Still....what's left of it is silver....

OK....I figured "nuthin' from nuthin' leaves nuthin"......and did the kind of thing that makes the guys at PCGS have nightmares....I took ammonia and 0000 steel wool and scrubbed that ugly half, and rubbed it between my fingers for 10 minutes or so....and it's actually almost presentable..but still has damaged surfaces. At least it won't offend my other silver coins now...even if it does offend the professional coin guru types. It's better than it was and I'm happier now.

You could have save yourself all that scrubbing and soaked it in Tarn-X. I found a Barber dime that looked worst than that and the Tarn-X cleaned it up real nice.

The tarn-x wouldn't have burnished the porous surface....though it might have removed some of the discoloration. Besides....I didn't have some of that stuff....and I had steel wool. It's funny....the scratch I put on it is what inspired me to go ahead with the rough treatment....and you can hardly see it now.

Nice coin. You did well with cleaning. :) I'm fairly aggresive with cleaning my coins. Only time I did worse on a coin was a few wheats. No loss there.

Hope you reach 100 in your silver quest. That would be impressive. However if you do the math just two a week and your over 100 for the year. But then we loose 3 months so it works out to more like 2.5 /wk. Doesn't seem to hard but I know what it's like to go through a dry spell.

Hi Bob.......I have it figured a little differently. Most of the private residences I've hunted have given (on average) 6 silver coins...because they're in town probably....so if I can get a few more unsearched yards in before the ground freezes...I just might be able to make it to 100. The yard I got that half from has now produced 9 silver coins. I actually thought maybe I'd find a deeper quarter or 2....never suspected I'd hit a half.

It was so dry and white when it came out of the ground...I actually thought it was an aluminum token.

It cleaned up better than I thought it would. It'll be pretty tough to get to 100....but I'm going to give it a try. I went back for a little while while the post office ladies were at lunch.....no such luck this time. I got a clad dime and 2 zincolns....and a small piece of aluminum window channel.

Great find wyatt!! I just dug a 48 frank on saturday.WTG!!

hey i dug one of them liberty bells last year and thats here in the uk,,, guess iam lucky then,, just cheched to see if it was worth out,,, about $10.00 and ?5.00 here,, still an interesting find,,,, HH paul.

I was beginning to think all of the Franklin half dollars were in England. I would have thought that I'd find one of those before finding 8 walking liberty halfs (the preceeding design)

It's not worth much. You can buy common ones on ebay for 5 dollars any day of the week.....but it's "another notch in my gun". I guess I'll be going after a Barber half now...

Wow, nice find, guess I need to hunt a little more around the Post Office ha! ha! I have found a neat silver cleaner and you can get it at Wal Mart, K-Mart or just about anywhere they sell it. It's called Connoisseurs Jewelry Wipes, it is a red plastic container. You get 25 Dry Disposable Wipes. I use one until it falls apart. On the coins that you don't really care about, it really cleans them up nice. Also silver rings and gold jewelry it is fine on also. I also use a electrolluses to clean the really hard coins and jewelry. HH Denny

Thanks for the tip. I might use something like that on jewelry, but my silver coins generally are just washed in soap and water. The surfaces of this half dollar were in extremely poor condition...so the extreme measures are a little more excusable. I like my silver coins to look natural...not dug...and not cleaned.

Jewelry is another story altogether....I like that to shine.

I'm "with you", Snee....I even keep bent dimes, and one's that have been chopped up with lawnmowers and run over by trains....but I was bummed because my first Franklin half had to look so pitiful. I'd waited a long time to get one...and until the steel wool...I was a wee bit disappointed.
