Hello,
On a recent hunt that was used by both Confederate and Union Troops John found two bullets and buttons. I only took pictures of the one bullet as they are the same, the buttons appear to be also. What is throwing me on the buttons is the steel back, hence no backmark. Any info on either would be greatly appreciated. The Buttons measure just under 16mm in diameter. The Bullets are .550 by 1.05 and have deep cavity. I don't have any scale the would measure the weight. One of the guys on the hunt said the bullets looked like "Georgia teets" but were not cleaned at the time. The nose on both are flat.

Thanks much,
BB

What's interesting is the iron back on the eagle buttons. That could mean they are repos but there were iron back eagle buttons. I have found them in two different sites in the Chattanooga area and they are both attributed to Ohio troops.

The bullet's "oversize" grooves/rings and its "oversize" base-cavity with very thin rim mean it is a modernday Lyman Mold .58 minie for Blackpowder game-hunters. I've still got about 20 of 'em, left over from my time in that sport. (Still got my muzzle-loading blackpowder rifle, too.)

The two ironbacked eagle buttons are definitely Repro. Their rim-shape is unlike any of the Originals. And, note that their eagle emblem, also unlike on the Originals, comes all the way over to the very edge of the button's rim.
