.38 S&W is an older, and different version of the .38 caliber bullet, which now is known as the .38 special. The .38 S&W casing is shorter, holding less gunpowder, You cannot shoot modern .38 Special bullets in a revolver marked .38 S&W. The .38 S&W was popular from the early 1900's to after WW2, from what I have read. Cool find, Sub 8-)
 

The crease you mentioned is the depth of the bullet seating in the case.
 

When i was a young policemena in the mid 70's that is what we used.....not much in the way of stopping power but then again I'm glad I never had to use it.....save for the range!
