Does that Indian head say 1873?

I believe your bullet is post 1880.

look inside the ring... if you see little vertical lines inside that ring, then it is post 1880. The little lines are called cannelures, and were not used until after 1880. You might have to scrub the patina off to see the lines.

Best of luck to you sir!

Oh yeah, welcome to TNet!

Enjoy your 2017 MDing.

It is interesting finding items that are obvious treasures, as your dime, and items of uncertainty to learn more about.

There are many on TN with very high knowledge level. It is nice to tap into what they know and learn new intriguing things.

might be a 45 /70 bullet from the 45 /70 springfeild trapdoor type rifle (single shot) .. they came out in 1873 and where used by the military and later on many were sold as military surplus --they were blackpowder type cartridges 45 caliber bullet / 70 grain charge of blackpowder ..custer had the springfeild trapdoor rifles when he was wiped out by indains using "repeating" rifles in 1876 -- many of the indains had lever action rifles who's rate of fire was much faster ...this was one of the faults found by the board that investigated why custer and his men were wiped out by the indains ..this lead to the army later on changing from the single shot 45 /70 rifle to repeating bolt action guns ..like the 30 /40 krag
