Bullet Shell or Something Else?

I found this today out in the woods near my home. Is it a shell from a bullet? If so, what kind? Old? New? Another thought was a percussion cap but it seems too big to be that.

I forgot to add that the whazzit is made of copper.

modern steel jacket bullet .223 maybe.

Definately a bullet, can tell by the rifling marks on it. Looks like it hit something hard like a rock and the jacket came apart. Wouldn't guess the caliber but it can be determined by miking the base. Copper or gilding metal jacket with a lead core. Monty

The more I look at it, I guess I found nothing more than a .22 jacket. I just thought it was curious that it look "blasted" like that but Monty's description seems to fit.
