I find 3 ringers and Enfields with powder in them but no distortion like that because these were wrapped and don't have the slot around the bottom. I wonder if they were loaded into something else and pushed out instead of being pulled. I know that sounds silly but the only thing I could think of that would cause that unless it is the powder...d2

Maybe fired from a larger caliber rifle than they were intended for. That might explain the mushroom effect.

They were not fired they are still full of powder.

Maybe from freezing and thawing. I've found some like that buddy. Not as bad though.

Of all the bullets we found here only the Gardners with powder in them were distorted. Just guessing I would say the three of us who hunted this spot together dug 100 bullets mostly Gardners and Enfield's.

Must be the powder that caused it then...d2

Joe, nice find on the Gardner bullets. Distorted or not, they are cool. Confetrit' Cool.

IMHO
&
From my experience ; I do see powder corrosion similar to the corrosion found on my Spencer & Burnside bullets that still were touching the powder.
There was some distortion but no where near as much as the Gardiner's show. They were also flat based if that matters.

In-pure Lead ? & Black powder?.

Good mystery.
