I know it's lead, it looks like a miniball, its 7/16ths to 9/16ths or so in diameter, but it has that darned odd groove at the bottom, and a "teet" on the top. Sorry the pics are terrible, my crackberry does not take good pictures and i dont' have a camera. it also has two shallower grooves above the large one, i thought originally it may be an uncut sprue but the sprue end seems to be at the tip, not at the base, it does have seams like it was in a two part mold (which it would have to have been given the large groove at the base) found 2 inches down in clay soil while diggin holes for my new fence (kid was diggin, i was messing around with my MD). I live about 2 miles or so from cold harbor civil war site in va, so while there is a potential for civil war stuff, i doubt it would have been found so shallow.

Re: bullet or whatzit?

yup dats it, i looked up williams cleaner, it's a union round (damned yankees), and makes sense since the union ostensibly approached cold harbor from this direction at some point (as stated about 1.5-2 miles away).

The boy will be stoked to find out it's from the civil war, he's ADHD and the only thing he'll slow down for is dirt fishing, the meds are helping tho :icon_thumright: ;D

Re: bullet or whatzit?

yep def CW era type item -- civil war era--williams "cleaner" type bullet -- they recommened every tenth round to shoot one of these rounds to remove the fouling caused by black powder in the barrel --(note the flat base --it has a peg that attaches it into the body of the bullet )
