Need help IDing a bullet from a CW battlefield, it's about .480 long and about .44, .45 dia. It's not round anymore so hard to tell exact dia.
I guess it's possible that it was carved off if so they did a perfect job of it.

I *think* it might be a carved bullet--the nose of a minieball that was carved off...

I'm not familiar with any CW ammunition that was that shape.


That's just my gut feelings to seeing it today. I'm not around my bullet book, so I can't look it up until later.

I agree. It's either a modified bullet or something else altogether. It appears to be tapered from bottom to top. A bullet will have at least a small portion that maintains it's diameter in order to serve as a driving band to engage the rifling.
