bullet id?

You're making it tough. The "bullet" is the part that leaves the rifle/pistol. The "case" is what stays behind and the "cartridge" is what it's called when they are still married and the round has not been fired yet.

Is the 2-7/8" including the bullet or just the case. What is the diameter of the bullet itself or the opening at the case mouth (the measure that tells caliber and the one you didn't give.

Does the case have a rim at the base? Or, is it s groove and the base the same diameter as the case above the groove (rimless)?

If the 2-7/8" is the overall length including the bullet that rules out the .30-06, .30-40 Krag and lots of variations.

I'm going to guess it's a .30-30 (.30 Winchester) and has a rim. Could also be a .32 Winchester or a .35 Winchester, less common but popular around 1918.

Sorry, I know next to nothing about ammo. But the case is 2" and bullet 7/8" (approx) The base has a rim which is slightly over 1/2" in diameter. Above the rim the case is 1/2" and narrows to 5/16" at the top. Sure wish I could include a picture. Thanks for your reply.

Is the case tapered or does it have a shoulder? Due to there being a couple of hundred variations, it is next to impossible to identify just from a description. Measurements need to be made with a set of calipers as " about" isn't close enough to make a positive ID. Sorry. M ??? nty
