found these in an area where my research has led me to believe that a union retreat took place. what im wondering is, were the round balls still used in the civil war, or could they be from another era. just trying to find evidence to support my guess of civil war activity taking place on this site. thank you everyone for your time. the rounds weigh about 25 grams a piece and measure about 3/4 of an inch across.

Round balls were def used but I think more confederate early war because the issues outfitting weaponry at the start

Round balls were used by both sides during the early years of the war.

I havnt researched as much union. I thought that may have been the case but wasn't sure. 3/4" is close to .75 cal isn't it? Or at least 69 cal. 75 was a revolution size if j remember right

i dont know anything about caliber measurements. one of the things i plan on getting once i get some extra cash is a set of calipers. i dont know of any revolutionary action here in the western part of virginia but that doesnt mean it didnt happen. thanks for the input folks.

after doing alot of the web surfing, ive found out that the 69 caliber musket balls used in the civil war era weighed about 400 grains. my rounds weigh 382 and 395 grains a piece. im guessing that each one lost a little lead over time due to oxidation or maybe some lead was lost after they were fired. now i need to figure out the range of the muskets these suckers were fired out of so i can narrow down the search range and start looking for the other side of the line of battle.

They could be canister shot from a cannon.

True. When a friend gets up ill ask what size the caused rounds typically were to see if anything was close.
