Re: Bullet casing ID

It's a shotgun shell. Probably a paper hull and it has rotted. I would guess 20's to 40's when it was made...d2

Re: Bullet casing ID

Base to a paper .410 bore shotgun shell. The .410 was introduced in the early 1900's and use paper hulls roughly up into the late 1950's.

Wow, that was quick. It's been a long time since I've hunted. Like 30 years to be exact. I thought I remembered 410 shells being bigger. Oh well, it comes with age.
Thanks everyone. We'll call this one solved.

Re: Bullet casing ID

The .410 bore is currently the smallest shotshell made in the USA. There is a smaller 9mm made in Europe for shooting rats however. The .410 is not the guage like other shotshells but is the actual bore size. There are guns being manufactured that will fire the .410 bore and the .45 Colt revolver cartridge interchangeably. Most people use .22 shotshells for killing rats and frogs and pests at very close range.

"Sometimes you need your rimfire shootin’ iron to act like a shotgun. We have you covered. Our shotshells hold a charge of small lead pellets in a special plastic capsule. Designed for short range pest control to about 15 feet. Not designed to cycle semi-auto firearms, but can be manually cycled in most semi-autos. FEATURES & BENEFITS: 22 LR has 31 grains of #12 shot at 1000 ft/sec (part number 0039). 22 Magnum has 52 grains of #12 shot at 1000 ft/sec (part number 0025). Will not harm your gun barrel. Any residue comes out with standard cleaning methods. Clean-burning propellants keep actions cleaner. Sure-fire CCI priming. Reusable plastic box with dispenser lid. "

Sorry, but it is correct. The various .22 caliber "shotshells" are not true shotgun shells, rather modified single projectile cases. You can also buy these modified "shotshells" in .44,.38,.357 and .45 Colt. There is a difference in shot shells and shotgun shells, shotgun shells being designed for use in a true smooth bore shotgun. They now make a handgun that will shoot .45 Colt and .410 bore shotgun shells interchangeably....if I haven't already said that. I have handloaded shotgun shells of several varieties for close to 45 years. I also reloaded shotshells for my handguns long before they ever became available by the manufacturers. I also own a 9mm smooth bore shotgun side by side with a .22 long rifle that is made in Belgium. It is a WWII souvenir that my dad brought home. Cheers. Monty
